Inspector George Gently, also referred to as simply George Gently, is a British crime drama series written for television by English playwright and screenwriter Peter Flannery (The Devil's Whore, The One and Only) and based on the George Gently novels by English crime author Alan Hunter. The series is set in the 1960's and follows Inspector George Gently and Detective Sergeant John Bacchus as police constables in the fictitious North East Constabulary. The television series of Inspector George Gently features English actor Martin Shaw (The Professionals, Judge John Deed) as the title character Chief Inspector George Gently, English actor Lee Ingleby (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, The A Word) as Sergeant and later Detective Inspector John Bacchus, and British actor and director Simon Hubbard (Every Second Sunday, Jack) as PC Taylor.
