The police were staked out at Sun Shang’s home to catch him. Kewei went upstairs to see her mother who was sick in bed, and saw her father Sun Shang slip out with his belongings. She watched him leave and dared not make any noises while the police were present. Before her mother passed away, she gave Kewei a ring, asking her to give it to her father. Kewei still wears the ring on a chain around her neck. Twenty years later, Sun Shang is a homeless man in the same city with Kewei, living on scraps from bins every day, while keeping an eye on his daughter without ever trying to approach her.
Kewei comes to the diner and orders soy sauce noodles. Shocked and thrilled to see the sesame seeds in her noodles, Kewei suspects that her father is nearby. When she hears that a homeless man suggested the idea of sesame seeds, Kewei leaves before she finishes the noodles.
The chef finds Sun Shang and tries to persuade him to meet Kewei. Kewei and the chef wait at the diner for Sun Shang who never shows up. All she gets from him is a note and a ring which is identical to the one on her chain. Kewei cries herself to sleep at the diner before Sun Shang finally shows up to see her. Kewei announces that she would retire from acting. The chef is delighted to receive a small gift box containing a key from Kewei.
Midnight Diner was broadcast on SBS ONE at Wednesday 7 February 2018, 13:00.
