Railways That Built Britain - Season 1 Episode 1
Railway buff Chris Tarrant embarks on a 200-year journey from the rise of the steam locomotive in the 1820s to its demise in the 1960s, explaining how the railways shaped the world far more than the computer or the internet. Railways created the great cities, gave Britain its National Health Service and the Football League, helped win wars and emancipated women. In the 1820s, a funny looking machine was pulling coal five miles along a primitive track between a mine near Newcastle Mine and the river Tyne. The locomotive, Puffing Billy, changed everything. Driving Puffing Billy himself, Chris tracks the railways that built Britain, uncovering the forgotten heroes of the early railway age.
