Railways That Built Britain - Season 1 Episode 2
By the 1900s the railways had changed the face of Britain. By 1913, over a million Britons were using the railways to travel to Paris and beyond. But the wonders of the new railways had a dark side. For years, military planners had been working on ways to use them for war. When that war came in 1914, they proved deadly: within days, three million German troops had boarded trains for France, while in Britain half the army did the same. By 1945, the railways once again saved the country. Effectively nationalised and run from a secret location buried deep in an old underground station, the railways organised the evacuation of over a million children from the cities, and helped bring back half the British army from the beaches and northern France.
