According to the Bible, the Ark of the Covenant was made at God’s command, some three thousand years ago, by the Israelites, as they wandered through the desert. It was to hold the stone tablets on which the ten commandments were written, and it was also to mark the Israelites’ special status as God’s chosen people; and his promise - to them - his covenant - that they would have a land of their own.
