Realising her marriage is a sham, Nella resolves to leave Amsterdam, but Marin and the servants plead with her to stay, since her departure will bring disgrace on the family and threaten to reveal Johannes' secret, which will endanger all. 52:12 Expired
Desperate to save Johannes, Nella decides to use what she's learned in Amsterdam to sell the sugar herself, even if this is a piecemeal process. Much to her surprise, she is met with initial success. She visits Johannes in jail, taking him food and money, but finds him in a desperate condition.
