Madeleine runs a successful business and her husband William has retired from a career in meteorology. They live in a beautiful house in the country with a magnificent view of the Alps. Their daughter, Elise, is studying architecture at the Villa Medicis in Rome. William plays golf and Madeleine likes painting landscapes in her spare time. One day, in a field, sitting at her easel, Madeleine meets Adam, a blind man who happens to be the mayor of the nearby local village. Adam has a beautiful wife, Eva. When he shows Madeleine a nearby run-down but beautiful old house, she and William immediately buy it and turn it into a beautiful home. Madeleine, William, Adam and Eva become friends. When the blind mayor's house burns to the ground, Adam and Eva move in with their new friends. One night, after a good meal and fine brandies, Madeleine follows Adam to the upstairs bedroom while William joins Eva on the couch. Then one day, Adam and Eva decide they can no longer live in the house where they lost everything in the fire - too many memories - and decide to go to the Pacific islands to lead a idyllic life. Madeleine and William soon join them and are even intent on selling their beautiful house but when they return after a few months, the joys of idle life in the tropics have faded somewhat.
