In the Nuba Mountains of Sudan, twelve year old Malia is snatched from the arms of her father during a Muharaleen raid on their village. Beaten and sold into slavery, she spends the next six years working for a Sudanese family. Then at eighteen, Malia is sent to work in London.
The city swiftly becomes as much a prison as the home in which she is kept; hidden in plain sight, Malia’s desperate situation goes unnoticed and uncared for. Stripped of her passport and living in terror of what might happen if she speaks out, Malia is trapped in an unforgiving, alien environment.
From the award wining team behind Death of a President and The Last King of Scotland and inspired by real-life events, I am Slave is a controversial thrilled about London’s shocking slave trade and one woman’s fight for freedom.
I Am Slave was broadcast on SBS ONE at Sunday 6 October 2013, 12:30.
