Max and Elsie find Engelmacher at his hideout and bring him to the police station, where he is interrogated by Elsie. Engelmacher reveals that he is in possession of valuable information, both personal and official. He demands that he speak with the Americans.
Max and Moritz discover that Franklin is helping Nazis escape prosecution and flee the country in return for stolen artwork. Max tells Claire that Franklin is helping ex Nazis, but he needs her help in exposing him.
March 2021
Karin kidnaps Trude, a member of Max and Elsie’s squad. She and Engelmacher threaten the lives of Trude’s daughters and force her to spy on the squad. When Karin and Engelmacher find out that the police know too much, they plan an attack on the police station.
With Gad’s help, Max learns about Nakam, a Jewish group seeking justice for German war crimes that Max believes may help lead him to Moritz. While delivering intel in the Russian sector for Engelmacher, Karin saves Marianne’s life when they are pursued by Russian soldiers but Marianne is left badly injured.
Moritz abducts and tortures his next victim, a former concentration camp guard, who reveals information on other Nazis in hiding. Max and Elsie make progress on their murder investigation. They locate Karin, but only succeed in driving her underground.
August 1, 1946. NYPD cop Max Mclaughlin arrives in the divided city of Berlin to help establish a civilian police force in the chaotic aftermath of the war. Meanwhile, he is also on a personal mission to find his missing brother, Moritz, a US soldier who fought in the war and is now secretly living in the city.
Haunted by the ghosts of his childhood and the complex, co-dependent relationship he has with his older brother, Max covers up all evidence of Moritz's murders. Franklin tasks Max and his rag tag German police squad with investigating the deaths of the two GIs, a highly unusual and high-profile assignment.
