Tensions rise between Harold and William when Edward names William his heir. Despite their wives' efforts to broker peace, both men harbour ambitions to be King. As family bonds fracture and loyalties shift, Harold refuses to swear loyalty - unaware that Edward is gravely ill.
As Edith is rescued, the Earls take control of England and Tostig is named Earl of Northumbria, enraging Sweyn. Lady Emma's plot for King Hardrada is uncovered and crushed.
