Joe’s brief leave from the Front has come to an end. He has tried hard to conceal his shell-shock from the family, but Grace knows that something is badly wrong. When Bert learns that he is unwittingly responsible for his brother’s state of mind he takes action, with disastrous consequences for the family.
1920. The war is over, and the village tries to come to terms with its loss. The date of the unveiling of the War Memorial draws close and as the inhabitants debate how best to honour their dead Grace learns that Joe will not join the list of the fallen. Divisions open up at the heart of the community.
1923. The Allinghams host a weekend party at the Big House for Edmund’s political sponsor Lord Kilmartin.
John is still keeping his head above water at the farm by milking his cows by hand, but Berts money is running out. There is tension in the Middleton marriage as Grace finds herself attracted to Bill, the local Labour candidate.
Grace and John continue to fall out over everything. John has constructed a mobile milking machine that turns his farm into a booming success, especially when Rutter’s cos contract TB so John has the monopoly on milk production.
Gilbert and Agnes get married in the face of Norma’s fierce opposition. Martha and Eyre steal some alone time together.
The future of the farm hangs in the balance; John is in a coma following the blow to his head at the Mass Trespass.
